KCCK’s Interview with recently past Grammy-winning Jazz Singer and UI Alum Al Jarreau – Does Cedar Rapids Still Smell Like Crunchberries?

KCCK – We are sorry to hear of the passing of the great Al Jarreau. Born in Wisconsin, Jarreau went to college at the University of Iowa and began his singing career in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at a club called the Tender Trap. While his parting from club owner Joe Abodeely was acrimonious (Abodeely released some early recordings of his band with Jarreau, against the singer’s wishes), in later years, Al spoke fondly of his years in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

KCCK’s Dennis Green spoke to Al in 2014.

About Iowa's Creative Corridor

The big idea is one region creating, living, building together and being a globally known magnet for creative people, families and commerce. Our mission is to connect, celebrate and support all those who dream big, push boundaries, and create here. The ultimate goal is an ever-thriving region, with residents building innovative organizations, participating in vibrant communities and exuding so much pride that we’re known around the world. We’ll get there by unleashing the talent in our people, connect them across generations, sectors, geographies and silos, and inspire everyone with the great stories of game-changing ideas and inventions created here.
